@ben_van Hey Ben! That sounds great, super keen for that! You’re right, we’d be using a fair amount of foam for the molds and potentially MDF as well.
Looking forward to the induction details - I’ll continue checking the forum in case of updates!
Hi,
When is the next laser-cutting induction going to be? In the meantime, could I request some help/advise for cutting some PMMA sheets?
Best,
Francisco
Hi Francisco, we are planning to have more inductions over the semester break. You can keep a lookout on the schedules page here, although we will likely post an announcement on canvas so you will be notified.
Happy to answer any questions you have about cutting acrylic (PMMA). Our wiki is still a work in progress and there is also some information there regarding compatible materials and thicknesses which you may find useful.

Hi Ben, thanks for replying and the link. So certainly my acrylic sheets can be cut (< 2-mm thick). I’m happy to take the inductions but, in the meantime, could you help me with some cuttings? The cuttings are very simple - Just some slabs

Yes, < 2mm thick acrylic is perfectly fine.

I understand the job you have may only be small and simple, however, as a lab geared toward teaching, I’m afraid we do not operate under this kind of model. When we are not holding inductions/training sessions our time is dedicated to upgrading the lab - Improving the space and bringing more machines and inductions online. The only exception to this was during the lockdowns.
We will always be happy to assist, just not in terms of operating equipment for you. I apologise for any inconvenience.
That’s understandable, Ben. Could you then give me some other alternatives? i.e. Could it be possible for you to assist me while I intend to cut my sheets?

Unfortunately, that won’t be possible. Gaining access to our laser cutter is through induction/training only. We will be scheduling some more sessions in the next couple of weeks. Again, I apologise for any inconvenience.
Alright. Just keep me posted then
Thanks,
Francisco
